The lei custom was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian voyagers. Leis were constructed of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts and feathers. In Hawaiian tradition these garlands were worn by ancient Hawaiians to beautify themselves and distinguish themselves from others.
