How to Create a DIY Kids Party

How to Create a DIY Kids Party

Children love to celebrate their birthdays with friends, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune or book a party experience at a local attraction. A DIY party at home is a great way to give your child a birthday to remember, and will probably end up being a lot easier than you expect.

Here at PartyWorld, we love parties! We can help with celebrations of all kinds and have all you need to create a kids party on any theme. Superheroes, pirates and princesses are all classic choices, and we have partyware and decorations for parties themed on all of the most popular children’s characters, too.

CREATE A KIDS BIRTHDAY PARTY AT HOME

Creating a birthday party for your child is all about designing a day that reflects their personality and doesn’t put unrealistic expectations on them. If your child is shy, you may find that a baking party for four children is much more enjoyable than a disco with their entire school class invited, for example. Don’t be afraid to do your own thing, and use our party planning tips to create a memorable occasion for your little birthday star.

  • 1. CHOOSE A THEME.

Your party theme can be anything that appeals to your child, from science experiments to insects, and you can buy packages of partyware featuring your child’s favourite character if you wish. Your theme will provide you with a basis for planning the rest of the party, from your invites to your take-home gifts, and this can make things easier at every stage. Come up with a list of ideas and discuss them with your child, or think about the type of food and decorations you would like to create and work out a theme that suits you. You can make costumes to suit your theme, too, or explore our range at PartyWorld.

  • 2. DECORATE YOUR HOME.

Of course, the best thing about having a party at home is that you don’t have to find or pay for a venue. If you don’t have space at home, consider asking a family member if you can host a birthday party in their home or garden, or look for a local community venue that will accommodate your party without costing the earth. Wherever you hold the party, decorating will make it feel special and you can find a range of party props at PartyWorld or create your own with some fabric, paint and crafting supplies. If you’re setting up at home, your child will love to get involved in the process and can help to add to the scene in the days and weeks before the big day. Building a castle out of cardboard boxes for a knights party, for example, can be a highlight for little ones and create an exciting party centerpiece.

  • 3. FIND FOOD IDEAS YOUR CHILD WILL LOVE.

Typical party food includes buffet-style sandwiches, crisps and cake, and you can add colour and style with fruit and vegetables for snacking on. However, it’s worth considering that hungry children are not always a pleasure, and adding some pizza slices and more filling options may be a good idea for all concerned. If adults are attending with their children, ensure you have enough food for them, too, and don’t be afraid to step out of the box and plan a sit-down meal or even a BBQ outdoors if you think that will suit your child and their guests better.

  • 4. KEEP CHILDREN OCCUPIED.

Talk to your child about what they imagine will happen at their birthday party and plan accordingly. For example, many parties include a children’s entertainer, but you may not need to incur the expense or the hassle of coordinating this if your child would prefer some simple games or just to play with their friends at home. Games such as pass the parcel and musical chairs are often very popular with children, and they will have a great time simply dancing to their favourite music while their parents chat.

  • 5. MAKE A CAKE.

A birthday cake is essential for a child’s birthday party, but it doesn’t need to be a designer affair from a local bakery (although it can be, if that’s what you want!). Making your child a birthday cake they will love simply involves listening to their ideas and making something tasty for them to enjoy. If you’ve never made a birthday cake before, don’t panic - it’s easy to follow a basic recipe and roll-out icing can create some fantastic effects with ease. There are several ideas for every theme online, so don’t let yourself get overwhelmed by the professionals and just focus on doing something fun for your child.
